Just a quick study to see how Robo looked back in late 2007 compared to now. Most people seem to like the chunkier version of Robo. I do to.
I got the itch to do this after talking with Brian Clevinger about redesigning Robo's shoulders because they just don't work. He can't shrug, he can't put his arms straight out to the side, etc.
Of course, I cheat and make it look like he can. But it bothers me to do so. The redesign, which you can see in Robo & The Ghost of Station X #2 (September), is fairly subtle, but still it worries me.
but then I drew this and saw ho much Robo has changed naturally over the past 3 1/2 years. And now I'm not so worried about it.
I just figured the various body changes were upgrades / limb replacement over the years. You should just show a room full of Robo arms or something. Just in the background, in passing.
I really love how his design has changed over time. He's become a much stronger silhouette and I love how he's gotten subtly caricatured over time. It's made him a lot more expressive in my opinion. I'm jazzed about the new shoulders.
I prefer him being squatter and rounder, but the original look is what hooked me in the first place. I can't wait to see where his look will go in years to come.
Wow, that change is really unnoticeable over time. I read through all the comics in like a month period and hadn't noticed. Makes me not worry so much about fully refining my characters' look before I get drawing the actual comic. Nice to know there's room for change! Good stuff!
